               Jira is made by an australian company named Atlassian. The name  "JIRA" is actually inherited from japanese word "Gojira" which means "Godzilla". And initially JIRA started as software developing tool  to support agile development methodology and mostly for the software developing team.

It is fully customizable to  your needs, you can customize your  work flow, you can add your custom issue type, you can add your feed and you can design your issue operations screens as for your team requirments.It have lot of features which make our daily life easier.
                         According to Atlassian, Jira is used for issue tracking and project management by over 75,000 customers in 122 countries. Some of the organizations that have used Jira at some point in time for bug-tracking and project management include Fedora Commons,  Hibernate, NASA, Skype Technologies, Twitter, the United States Department of Defense, and the Apache Software Foundation, which uses both Jira and Bugzilla. Jira includes tools allowing migration from competitor Bugzilla.

Jira contains four packages:

Jira Core is intended as generic project management
Jira Software includes the base software, including agile project management features (previously a separate product: Jira Agile)
Jira Service Desk is intended for use by IT or business service desks.
Jira Ops is intended as incident management 



Jira software support any agile methodology, be it scrum,kanban,or your own unique flavour.
